Abstract

The current state of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies development and deployment in the United States is reviewed. In addition to describing the various service categories of ITS, such as Automated Collision Warning Systems (ACWS), Automated Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS), etc., the status of several ITS-related standards is examined in the context of their consideration of motorcycles as target vehicles. Drawing from participation in a recent demonstration project conducted at the Transportation Research Centre, East Liberty, Ohio, the opportunities and challenges wide-scale deployment of ITS technologies may present to motorcycle safety is discussed from the rider's perspective; with particular emphasis on Automated Collision Warning Systems (ACWS), Automatic Cruise Control (ACC) and Automated Collision Notification Systems (ACNS). A summary of recommendations is provided toward exploring those promising technologies that will enhance motorcycle safety, and minimising the impact of those technologies that may compromise motorcycle safety.
