Abstract

There is great interest in the use of Fiber-Optic Information Highways. This paper explores how Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will require such a communications infrastructure based on leading edge technologies of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) transport. Ultimately, the paper tries to provide insight into how this new technology will change the way we live, work and travel today. (A)
