Abstract

Automatic toll collection forms an integral part of electronic road pricing. The potential of Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) systems in the operation of automatic toll collection is widely recognised. This paper reviews the operational characteristics of AVI, with case studies showing how the toll capacity can be improved in practice. It was shown that AVI can improve the toll performance by potentially doubling the toll capacity, with further possible increase depending on the toll lane configuration. (A)
