Abstract

For the Directorate-General of Freight Transport, AVV are studying the causes of accidents between trucks and passenger vehicles. Signals from the freight transport sector indicate that a factor of great importance may be (mutual) misunderstandings between passenger vehicle drivers and truck drivers concerning the situation in which the other person finds himself. The project's goal is to gain insight into the size and causes of the problems between truck and passenger vehicle drivers. The current report, a study of literature that completes the earlier quick-scan of American literature, is meant to gain more insight into the issues at hand. It is concluded that the number of truck-passenger car accidents is not extremely big, but the outcome is often very serious. The types of accidents taking place are mainly frontal, intersecting staight paths and rear end accidents. In these accidents the passenger car driver seems to be erratic more often than the truck driver. However, these conclusionsare based only on fatal accidents. (A)
