Abstract

A technique is described for observing face to face encounters between car drivers. A high degree of interrate reliability was achieved. It was found that female drivers give way to male drivers in such encounters at roundabouts. Observations of the make of car and sex of the driver showed that there was a significant lack of women driving the larger car. Observations of interactions of male drivers showed that the site of the vehicle was not a determinant of yielding behaviour.
