Abstract

The Dual Mode Mobile Multimedia System is an experimental system to demonstrate the multimedia capabilities provided by Digital Radio Broadcasting (DRB or DAB) when combined with a two way packet data wireless channel for interactivity and other low bit-rate information services. The current system configuration offers a variety of services including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications, traffic and driving information, e-mail, and instant access to selected World Wide Web sites. The experimental system is also used to conduct research studies on various issues such as the required level of error correction for suitable performance of the multimedia services in a mobile environment, and latency issues for the quick interactive download of multimedia data. This paper provides information on the feasibility of integrating DRB/Personal Communications System (PCS)/GPS/computer technologies for ITS applications. It also proposes an evolutionary scenario for the introduction of data services to mobile users. The project, led by CRC, is conducted in collaboration with several Canadian industry partners. (A*)
