Abstract

Maintaining a transportation system that can cope with land development has been the main challenge to local government authorities in Malaysia. Realizing this fact, traffic engineers and planners in the country are investigating interactive traffic impact assessment models or techniques which are associated with geographical information systems (GIS) as the most popular supporting tool for providing databases and displaying the results of the analyses. However, the application of GIS is not as straightforward as in most developed countries since digitalization of the base map and compilation of the demographic information for the country are yet to be completed and handily available for public use. Interim measures to overcome the shortcomings of a complete GIS package have to be sought to keep up with the need to develop interactive traffic analysis and management tools for local authorities. This paper proposes a procedure to conduct an interactive traffic impact assessment for the district of Kuantan with the aim of future integration with the national GIS framework.
