Abstract

In this paper, the authors present a pre-trip route planning module that is part of a larger traffic information system. The intermodal route planner produces a route possibly containing different modes of transportation such as trains, buses or car. This overall route combines sub-routes computed by several unimodal route planners, including the transfer points between the transportation means. Latest available road information as well as current schedules from public transportation lines are regarded when calculating the total route. The complexity of the task and the possibility to solve the problem in parallel suggest methods of distributed artificial intelligence such as multi-agent systems and heuristics.
