Abstract

The publication considers a number of issues concerned with US intermodel transportation policies. The issues include: a review of the planning and funding of the US transport system; the planning mechanisms developed in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) concerned with intermodal transportation management; and the achievement of more economical and environmentally efficient transportation systems through the optimum use of various combined modes. An assessment is made of how such issues need to be integrated into a transportation planning process. Conclusions consider intermodal systems, their management and their potential for further development.
