Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to assist in developing a deeper understanding of the future career opportunities in the intermodal transportation industry. Intermodal is defined as the efficient movement of people, goods, resources, and information using an integrated system of air, land and sea modes. This paper explores the significant intermodal career opportunities and new job descriptions for the 21st century and focuses on emerging careers. The needs and opportunities for well-trained intermodal engineers, technologists, specialists and managers are examined. The new career opportunities that will emerge for intermodal technologists by the year 2005 are investigated. This paper explores the significant career opportunities that will appear, in which a broad range of new technologies are successfully introduced that span all transportation areas and provide enhanced connectivity; and that new jobs will emerge as: new information systems and networks are implemented, new intermodal services are provided, greater attention is given to system management, and many traditional jobs are replaced by new ones that require advanced technical skills and business practices. Finally, this presentation describes a comprehensive and innovative approach by the National Aviation and Transportation Center (NAT Center), to prepare transportation specialists for careers in intermodal transportation through innovative education, training and applied research programs.
