Abstract

This report is the second of a series, comparing the main features of transport within different countries. The first presented aggregate indicators (see IRRD 813708). This second report covers detailed aspects of road accident deaths statistics. Changes in road accident deaths in the member countries of the Eeuropean Ccommunity are discussed and compared with those in selected countries in the rest of Eeurope, and with data from Japan and the USA. Data from Spain and Portugal are included when this is available. The main body of the report provides summary tables, charts and commentaries on thedata. These comprise road accident deaths by: a) age groups; b) road user; and c) per billion vehicle kilometres. Appendix a contains the detailed historic time series for each country from which the summary tables and charts were prepared. Appendix c lists the principle road safety measures taken over the period 1983 to 1987. These include the year of introduction of seat belt legislation and of the current maximum legal limit of alcohol consumption for fitness to drive for each country.
