Abstract

Safety effects of cycle facilities are discussed. Cycle traffic varies significantly between countries and within countries. International comparisons suggest that in Europe cycling is particularly prevalent in Scandinavia, North West Europe and Hungary. Research needs are studies of the safety effects of different designs of major street intersections, use of cycle lanes at major intersections, and the safety effects of cycle lanes.
