Abstract

In Rio de Janeiro and in Baltimore, all pedestrian fatalities are referred to medical-legal institutions, and cases were studied. The pedestrian death rate in Rio de Janeiro for all ages combined was approximately four times rate for Baltimore. In Baltimore, three-fourth of the fatally injured pedestrians were elderly, very young, or impaired by alcohol, whereas only one-fourth of those killed in Rio had similar limitations.
