Abstract
As part of an international survey of drivers' attitudes to road safety 1400 drivers in the UK were sent a questionnaire to elicit their opinions. The response rate (81%) was very good for a postal survey of this length. Overall, respondents had a pessimistic view of road accident trends, most believing that they would be more at risk in the future than they are at present, although road accidents have been decreasing in recent years. There was a general acceptance that seat belts were fairly effective in preventing injury in most accidents but a majority of the respondents were opposed to compulsory seat belt wearing.
