International Road Safety Comparisons presents detailed tables of road fatality rates for Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations and Australian states/territories. These rates allow Australia’s road safety performance to be compared with other OECD nations while taking into account the differing levels of population, motorisation and distances travelled. Australia’s road fatality rates in 2001 were all below the corresponding OECD median rates. In 2001, Australia: • had the 11th lowest rate in terms of fatalities per 100 000 population; • had the 9th lowest rate in terms of fatalities per 10 000 registered vehicles; • had the 4th lowest rate in terms of fatalities per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled. Of the OECD nations for which 2001 data were available, Norway recorded the lowest rate of fatalities per population, registered vehicles and vehicle kilometres travelled. The Australian Capital Territory performed better than any Australian state/territory or OECD nation in terms of all reported road fatality rates. The Northern Territory recorded the highest fatality rates of all Australian states/territories.
