Abstract

The EU Directive for a European Interoperable Electronic Tolling Service (EETS) was adopted more than two years ago. Since then a lot of activitiesfrom all stakeholders including the European Commission were started. TheRegular Committee, with the help of its Expert Groups, is working on the definition of the EETS. They are supported by the standardisation organisations through the mandate M/338. Considerable work has been done in the project MEDIA , a private initiative of toll operators, in which it was shown that interoperability is possible especially between DSRC based systems. The not yet sufficiently considered problem of interoperability between DSRC based systems and autonomous, satellite based systems will be addressed in the new EU funded project RCI. Major results are expected from this project that will help to specify the EETS. In addition the CESARE III project will deal with all non technological related issues, especially the contractual interoperability, taking into account the different legal situations in the member states of the EU. All these activities may lead to a harmonized definition of EETS, although probably not within the time frame set by the EU. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
