Abstract

A targetted review of literature on innovative infrastructural measures to improve safety at intersections revealed that while much research is being undertaken on improving intersection safety, little is being undertaken on specific measures that will better align intersection design to the principles of Safe System; that is, designs that minimise the risk of fatal or serious injuries resulting from an intersection crash. The focus of the review was on innovative designs and so generally only designs that appear new or creative in its approach have been presented in the report. Some standard designs that are still uncommon in Victoria, Australia, have also been presented, as has the roundabout and its derivations, to highlight the aspects of its design that align so closely with Safe System philosophy.
