Abstract

The objectives of this paper are twofold. The first is to summarize the main results of Swedish research on capacity and traffic safety at intersections as they have been presented to practising traffic engineers. The second is to describe the principles of the modern Swedish traffic engineering guidelines on choice of intersection type and control, on evaluation of alternative intersection types and on geometric design. The paper also gives a background to the guidelines and the capacity and traffic safety research program they rely on.
