Interstate Highway shoulder use study in South Dakota

Abstract

The interstate Highway Shoulder use study was initiated in May 1963 to collect factual drita on the use of shoulder areas for parking purposes on a controlled access highway facility. The project was ac,:omplished by the South Dakota Department of High- ways in cooperation with the Bureau of Public Roads utilizing one and one-half percent HPR funds.This stuay is not the first shoulde: use study to be conducted,however, the number of such studies is relatively small.The results of this study are offered to supplemeJ or substantiate the findings from earlier shoulder uwe studies on similar type highways.Knowledge of shoulder usage can be utilized by the highwaysxengineer when selcting a roadway design and when planning the size and distribution of safety rest areas along hte highway routing.The information is also of interest to enforcement groups who are responsible for the maintenance and control of traffic on the Interstate Highway System.
