Abstract

This paper discusses the result of ITS deployment planning conducted along the 2nd Keihan Expressway (hereinafter referred to as 2KE) with due consideration to regional specific aspects. 2KE is a road that passes through a chronically congested area where TDM (Transportation Demand Management) is actively pursued. What makes this road more unique is that it is connected directly to a commercial/shopping center at the parking area. Some of the outcomes of study about the possibility of ITS application include introduction of ETC-DSRC (Electronic Toll Collection - Dedicated Short-Range Communication) system and P&BR (Park and Bus Ride). The ETC-DSRC enables vehicles to ingress and egress alternatively between the toll road, and the ordinary road giving some form of financial advantage for a vehicle which travels on and off the toll road. P&BR utilizing low emission buses operates on and off the 2KE with assistance of ITS technology. (A*)
