The remit of the Bundesanstalt fuer Strassenwesen (BASt) Federal Highway Research Institute in Germany is to promote development of roads and to improve the efficiency of road transport and to provide its parent organisation the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Housing (Bundesministerium fuer Verkehr, Bau- and Wohnungswessen - BMVBW) with data to assist decision-making relating to transport policy. The test facilities available at BASt are described and the areas in which it cooperates with international and European organisations are outlined. The work conducted by the five technical divisions of BASt is described. These divisions are highway construction technology, bridges and structural technology, traffic engineering, automotive engineering, behaviour and safety in highway traffic and administrative services.
