Abstract

The characteristics, the components, the performance, and the proven record of the automated vehicle control system, "E-com RIDE", opened in March 1999 at "MEGA WEB", a car theme park in Odaiba, Tokyo, are described. The purpose of this system is to give people the chance to experience futuristic transit systems and for us to learn about designing new, safer automated transit systems. This system has not only active vehicle control but also travel management with infrastructure for transporting passengers more safely. Since March 1999, about 220,000 people have ridden on an "e-com". No accidents have occurred, and there have been very positive responses from visitors.
