Abstract

This report gives an overview of the various forms of communication at the side of the road, aimed at reducing speed on motorways. The aim is to prepare experiments by the Dutch Motorway Police (KLPD). The forms of communication dealt with are those relating the speeds driven and the control activities to the behaviour of either individual drivers or of all drivers collectively. The control activities can be announced, can be made visible, or can be revealed to the driver afterwards. The report describes the following subjects: (1) who is the information aimed at; (2) which information is given; and (3) which medium is used. The information can be aimed at knowledge, attention, possible consequences, and social influencing. The report gives an outline of a strategy that can be followed. The aim is to achieve the most relevant behaviour measurements by means of giving information. A literature study is used for describing the effects of different information types. The conditions and assumptions for different forms of feedback are also dealt with. This results in a number of suggestions for experiments. (A)
