Abstract

This report covers a survey of research into traffic and transport in The Netherlands. The objective of the survey was to chart the most important suppliers of traffic and transport research. These organisations were surveyed by means of a literature study, with the emphasis on transport by land. Air transport and transport by water were not taken into consideration. 251 Institutions were selected by desk-research. Information about the research topics has been collected by means of a telephone poll. More than 80% of the institutions approached responded to this poll. The twenty-nine most important research institutions in the field of traffic and transport were approached in writing. They were asked to indicate the significance of the various themes and aspects. More than 65% of this group returned the questionnaire, often accompanied by additional information (annual reports, etc.). In absolute terms, more research focuses on passenger transport than goods transport. It is not possible to indicate whether substantive or strategic aspects are of greater importance; these results deviate less from each other than in the case of goods/people. Intermodal transport appears to be less significant than themes such as logistics chains and collective and individual passenger transport. The combination of the environment, spatial planning and the consequences of traffic and transport appears to be very important in both collective and individual passenger transport. The combination of logistics chains and information technology appear to be more relevant to goods transport. This study itemizes the research supply. When confronted with the research demand, conclusions can be drawn indicating those areas in which research should be encouraged. The results of this survey pertain to the current situation (Spring 1995). It is recommended that the data be checked, amended and updated regularly.
