Abstract

The AGILE project aims to develop a new set of training, information, counselling and driving ability assessment and support tools for the elderly, evaluating their full range of physical, cognitive, behavioural and interaction abilities and not just checking a few sensory and motor functions (as is currently the case). This is approached through a number of intermediate objectives. D1.1 established a clear identification of elderly drivers’ problems in relation to various driving tasks and an aetiological classification of their traffic accidents. This next objective is to survey elderly driver assessment procedures in a number of EU member states and to produce relevant assessment criteria, parameters, tools and thresholds. This deliverable (D2.1) aims to achieve this intermediate objective and consists of an introduction and seven internal reports, compiled in order to achieve the following objectives: * To acquire the appropriate knowledge and understanding of existing assessment criteria, tools and strategies. * To recognise the critical parameters and criteria in assessing the driving ability of the elderly and establish some indicative margins for them. * To identify an additional set of assessment parameters for particular elderly cohorts. Each section has its own discussion so that it constitutes an autonomous body of work and the reader may choose to focus on only one or two aspects of the report if required and a brief overall conclusion is provided at the end of the report.
