Abstract

Public transport companies must change from product directed policies into passenger directed policies. In the region of the city of Arnhem a test has been done into new methods of marketing. Some conclusions show that car users perceive their journey time lower than the real journey time while public transport passengers perceive their journey time equally. The operating costs of the car transport are estimated too low, and car users estimate the costs of public transport too high. Most car users have no good information on the possibilities of public transport, and car users as well as public transport passengers consider the car as the most comfortable transport mode. Investment in public transport will only lead to increased use when the service levels are improved.
