Measures of inconsistency identify moment to moment fluctuations in performance and are thought to reflect changes in driving behaviour over time for individual drivers. They can measure small details in time series such as the frequency of corrective actions made to return the vehicle to a safe situation after being distracted. This research aimed to determine whether inconsistency measures provide useful insights into driving simulator performance that are not captured by standard statistical measures and therefore provide a better way of determining how performance is affected by impairment (e.g. fatigue, distraction, medication, ageing). Using driving simulator data, the research investigates entropy (a measure of inconsistency) compared to standard measures of intra-individual variability (inconsistency) of lateral position, steering angle and speed.
