Abstract

Lane occupancy was evaluated as a traffic variable for digital computer control of a safety warning system for urban freeways. Performance characteristics were studied of measured lane occupancy as an indicator of shock waves resulting from freeway incidents. A control strategy was developed, programmed, and evaluated for digital computer operation of the warning system.
