Abstract

Between 1967 and 1977 the number of fatalities at highway/railroad crossings dropped from about 1500 to 900 in the U.S.A. This has been due to an expansion of federal funding for safety improvements. Now the law establishes that the federal government will provide 90% of the cost of crossing safety improvements. Crossing related research however is still needed, but joint efforts are getting already desired results.
