Abstract

IRIS is a concept for individual dynamic travel information for public transport, currently being developed in the Netherlands. The project started off at the beginning of 2000 as a feasibility study focusing on the provision of information to travellers as well as other forms of service such as reservations and payment. With the technology not a problem, it soon became clear that the question was not if an integral travel information system could be set up, but when and how it would happen. A supplementary study, focusing on the organisational feasibility, was needed. The aim of this supplementary feasibility study was threefold: (1) to develop a vision of the ambition and role of the IRIS project group; (2) to the gauge the commitment of interested parties; and (3) to draft and verify a plan of approach for 2001 and beyond. The development of a vision of the ambition and role of the IRIS project group has resulted in a clear distinction between the IRIS concept, the IRIS project group and the Travel Information Platform. In order to establish how committed the interested parties are, various interviews were entered into. The conclusion of the interviews that have been held is that the realisation of a comprehensive system for dynamic public transport information, and as part of this for individual travel information such as IRIS must be broadly borne. The supplementary feasibility study has also resulted in two tangible sequels that will be started up in 2001 and from which there appears to be commitment from the various parties: the project `IRIS 2001 Concept Development' and the `Core Group for Comprehensive Public Transport Travel Information'.
