Abstract

IRIS is an autonomous data collection and processing system that exploitsrecent advances in ultra wideband (UWB), WiMax and radio fibre technologies to provide data and multimedia services for vehicles along a stretch ofthe M4 motorway in the UK. Vehicles receive location sensitive data and potentially data from other sensing devices along the M4 and exchange data with roadside embedded sensors already in place. This data is processed remotely and used for short term and long term purposes. IRIS provides the link between the fixed and mobile systems and enables a better use of infrastructure.
