Abstract
The authors of the first chapter are active in the Special Programma of the Science and Engineering Research Council to promote research on information technology in transport. The first chapter outlines the structure of the book. It is arranged such that chapters concerned with data collection are followed in turn by those dealing with system monitoring and control, those dealing with optimization of operations, and those dealing with driver information.
