Abstract

Driver training is viewed as having four rules: transmitting minimum levels of knowledge and skill; giving drivers the capacity to resist negative forces; teaching drivers to use their experiences in a positive way; and linking with other driver control programmes so as to maintain and extend what has been taught. Some of the fundamental issues in each of these areas are discussed. Teaching the skills of self- management in the pursuit of positive driving goals is emphasised.
