Abstract

The author suggests that integrated traffic management systems (ITMS) are the solution to congestion and outlines the potential role of Daimler-Benz. The objectives of ITMS are outlined and the distinction made between traffic management and capacity management. Services involved in traffic management include a) control and information systems, b) automatic charging, c) parking space management and d) information systems. Capacity management in public transport and freight traffic is considered as a logistic assignment. Daimler-Benz's past experience in vehicle production, traffic control technology, logistics and information processing is noted and the setting up of a new company devoted to ITMS described.
