Abstract

The French parliament adopted a law on 30th of December 1996 for the air quality and energy saving. This law requests the authorities at national, regional and local levels to prepare actions in order to: (1) monitor the air quality and define thresholds and limits; (2) organise the transportation system in accordance with environmentally friendly objectives with special attention for infrastructure building and urban planning; and (3) prepare reactions in case of emergency situations. These requests lead to different aspects of the involvement of the intelligent transport systems. Some of them have already been studied in research and development programs but they need new concepts to be developed and more attempts at integration in the architecture of the traffic and the multimodal management and equipment. New concepts of traffic control can help in keeping good air quality.
