Abstract

Some systems that contribute to increased efficiency of road management, an important element of the ITS architecture, are described. The role of a comprehensive road management support system, focusing on preventive measures against traffic accidents and other disasters, is reviewed. The application of ITS to road disaster prevention is described. Sensors and cameras detect incidents, monitor the traffic and provide weather information (such as icy roads). Flow diagrams illustrating the ITS architecture are provided. Information may then provided to traffic patrols via portable link-ups to the ITS system. The condition of the road surface is also monitored using this system. Support systems and future developments of the system are described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
