Abstract

Great expectations are being placed on intelligent transport system (ITS) as an effective solution to various traffic-related problems, such as traffic accidents, traffic congestion, aggravation of the environment surrounding expressways, deterioration of the global environment, and growing energy consumption. The Japanese government plans to make the New Tomei-Meishin Expressway (a section between Toyota, Aichi Prefecture and Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture) a model case of the introduction of ITS. The section will be open to traffic in the year 2003. The Japan Expressway Public Corporation is now constructing the new expressway. It has conducted studies on the necessary applications of the intelligent transport system, after studying characteristics of the new expressway, traffic accidents, drivers' needs for traffic information, and other factors. This is a report on the outline of the studies and the types of applications needed for New Tomei-Meishin Expressway system.
