Abstract

Lebanon will soon be embarking on a major traffic infrastructure project, expected to receive World Bank funding. The Urban Transport Development Project (UTDP) encompasses equipping some 200 intersections with traffic signals, installing 40 CCTV cameras for surveillance along four corridors, and a traffic control system hosted in a traffic control center that oversees the system management and operation. The paper describes the preparatory studies leading to the formulation of the project. The main features of the proposed hardware and software are characterized, explaining the various system components. It also identifies the expected benefits, economically and environmentally, and concludes that ITS deployment was a necessary prologue to more capital-intensive projects in mass transit and expressway construction.
