Abstract

In Okayama prefecture, a high-speed information network with a large capacity, called the `Okayama information highway', has been developed. This network, which covers the whole prefecture, is accessible without cost to private companies, research institutes and communication business companies. By using this `Okayama information highway' and developing `Okayama ITS' that takes into account this area's characteristics, the staff of the Okayama national highway work office in the Ministry of Construction aim to get rid of traffic problems on highways. Since Okayama prefecture was designated as one of the five demonstration model testing cities in Japan in 1998, a prefectural ITS development plan was agreed. This article describes the outline of the whole demonstration testing, several service contents under development and testing evaluation according to a questionnaire.
