Abstract

This paper describes the BAAMS (behaviour, attitude, awareness, motivation and skill) safety system developed to address the driver training dilemma by linking the five human elements that contribute to a safety culture on the road. Based on occupational health and safety systems and behaviour based approaches, the model recognises that the behaviour of drivers is dependant on their attitude, awareness and motivation in addition to essential vehicle control and risk management skills. Providing drivers with learning opportunities based on this system is a crucial component of a multifaceted approach to road safety.
