Abstract

ITS systems, in combination with Internet-based technologies, can be used synergistically to help facilitate and manage intermodal transportation. The purpose of this paper is to: (1) examine briefly the potential role of e-business and the Internet in both public and private sector intermodal freight planning; (2) suggest business and public policy reasons to integrate public sector ITS systems with private sector information systems to facilitate intermodal transport and, ultimately, both public sector transportation planning and private sector business planning; and (3) present brief examples of systems currently being developed that may help to bring this vision into a reality. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
