There exists enormous potential for application of Intelligent Transport Systems for better managing the National Highway System to optimize its usage. The paper covers the salient features of the Indian National Highway System, an appraisal of the existing management systems, the potential for use of Intelligent Transport Systems in optimally utilizing the road infrastructure and the efforts made in developing a Road Information System (RIS) for data management and Road Corridor Management System for providing acceptable level of service.
