Abstract

In the age of rapid changes at both the global and local levels, the Korea Highway Corporation (KHC) is pressed to install a suitable ITS on the highway to a total of 3,400 km by 2004. In order to achieve this goal, KHC has faced the necessity of developing a traffic management strategy that can adapt to the rapidly changing transportation environment, by reexamining the current ITS systems, various algorithms, hardware, and software, etc. In the new highway era linking the national latticed network, it is also necessary to establish the requirements from end users and service providers, and to develop efficient deployment and investment strategies. This paper will explain how to set up ITS master plan to facilitate an efficient operation of freeways in Korea.
