Abstract

This paper describes the purpose and scope of the International Harmonized Research Activities (IHRA) Working Group on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Although ITS comprises a diverse family of technologies and applications, this joint government Working Group has intentionally focused on the need to develop systematic procedures and criteria for testing the safety of advanced in-vehicle information, control and communication. ITS systems and related technologies are evolving very rapidly and their potential to influence motor vehicle safety is considerable. Under the auspices of Enhanced Safety Vehicle (ESV), the IHRA were established to facilitate collaborative research in priority areas. It is hoped that this joint research will lead to a shared understanding of the issues and provide a sound scientific basis for harmonized policies.
