Abstract

Theft, smuggling, counterfeiting and terror attacks constitute serious security threats against private stakeholders and national economies. Research and Development (R&D) in the field of Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) have mostly focused on solutions that improve transportation efficiency and safety. This article illustrates a framework for cost-benefit analyses to support design and investment in ITS security systems. Next, it shows how a network centric architecture can be used to integrate ITS solutions and to improve cargo security, safety, environmental impact, and logistics efficiency. The framework is demonstrated with an ITS security solution at Stockholm-Arlanda airport that was developed by Saab. Finally, the possibilities for managers and policy makers are discussed.
