Abstract

A recent increase in automotive traffic has worsened social problems over traffic, such as a growing number of accidents, chronic traffic congestion and environmental degradation. The Oita district is no exception. Congestion is a serious problem along inner-city roads and streets around sight-seeing spots. Furthermore, Oita has been nominated as one of the sites to host the 2002 World Cup, arousing a need to work out measures to deal with congestion and other traffic problems. One of the most effective measures is the deployment of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which is expected to help ease traffic problems like accidents and congestion and assist in the management of large-scale events. Given these circumstances, this paper studies workable ITS services to solve problems over road traffic in Oita and formulates a plan to put ITS into practical operation in the district. An implementation plan is also worked out to deploy ITS services by the year 2002 when the World Cup games will take place. This plan is also explained. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
