Abstract

Recently car navigation systems have come into wide use. The current trend in car navigation is that towards three-dimensional route guidance. Each manufacture of car navigation system employs his own operation system (OS) and three-dimensional computer graphics system, so that the compatibility of 3D software does not exist. The authors have already revealed the benefits of introducing VRML (virtual reality modelling language) into car navigation. That is, VRML is a kind of data structure and has generality in that any type of VRML viewer can be used. The most of presently available VRML viewers plugged into Web browsers, however, are not adequate for car navigation use. A prototype viewer specially designed for car navigation by using Java is described.
