Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the problems of evaluating the safety of traffic plans. It had to be determined what information plans give for the evaluation of traffic safety. An inventory was made about the conditions that the building law and the code of building laws require of plan documents and plans. In addition, the actual contents of plans were studied and the planners in some cities were interviewed about the role of traffic in the planning process. The measurement of traffic safety in already existing built-up areas was studied. Requirements for information in accident registers were determined, in order to enable the evaluation of the safety in different kinds of areas and thus to get information for the needs of planning. Experiments were made concerning the usefulness of two terms (number of inhabitants and length of traffic routes) as exposure in finnish towns.
