Abstract

Using a traditional multi-mode transport model and PROVO, a network optimization program, it is determined for a polynuclear metropolitan area, which public transport network structure is the most promising to reduce the amount of car kilometres. Two different network strategies were studied, one with few lines, but relatively high speeds and a much denser network with relatively low speeds. Also the position of tangents compared to radiales has been looked at. The study shows that the preferred network depends on the urban development structure, the desired level of service and financing method. With low demand, low investments and no constraints for operating costs the dense network performs best. When demand is higher, investments are higher and operating costs are limited a sparse high speed net work is more appropriate. (A)
