Abstract

A working group was installed to research the problems arising when a residential area is opened, in particular with the view on the quality of life in such areas. The working group presents its first report with a twofold purpose (1) to advertise the views of the working group on residential areas, by which the reader is asked to comment upon these views, and (2) for the preparation of a manual of traffic engineering for measures in non-residential roads, which will be edited later. This manual will contain concrete proposals for structure designs, by which a systematic, arranged selection of solutions is given for the possible conflicts between slowly moving traffic and the opening of such areas for cars. These solutions are determined by weighing the interests of the majority of the users of the residential area: the pedestrians and the cyclists on one hand, and on the other hand of the appreciation of the motorised traffic of the usefulness of opening the particular road or street.
